Mental health is influenced by the individuals social, economic and environmental conditions, mainly the ones in which they are born, raised and work in. “Poverty and deprivation are key determinants of children’s social and behavioral development and adult mental health” (Knifton & Inglis. 2020). Disparities in mental health materialize early in life and become more noticeable throughout childhood. Individuals living in low-income areas have an increased likelihood and developing a depressive or anxiety disorder than individuals living in affluent areas. Environmental conditions such as violence, hunger, poor health, single parent homes, domestic violence all can lead to the developing of depression. Domestic violence, single parent homes and street violence can happen anywhere, not just low-income areas, the point is that odds are a child living in a higher income city has access to more resources such as mental health providers, increased police force and a working parent/guardian that holds private health insurance with increased coverage. Stigma of poverty is a central cause of healthcare disparities of depression and” international evidence has demonstrated that poverty stigma is associated with poor mental health among low-income groups (Knifton & Inglis. 2020). Adverse events that take place in a child’s life is another strong predictor of mental health disorders and can lead to poor coping mechanisms such as drug use and alcohol abuse. We need global change in the way we view mental health and there needs to be more investment in mental health services in low-income areas.
